Nipissing University is a public higher education establishment in Ontario, Canada. Since becoming an independent university in 1992, Nipissing has served the Northern Ontario community. In addition, the institution is recognised for academic and research excellence and a positive student experience.
Today, Nipissing offers a variety of courses and degrees, from diplomas to postgraduate qualifications. However, the establishment specialises in undergraduate programs in various fields. These include Environmental Sciences, Criminal Justice, Physical and Health Education, Business and Arts.
As a well-known centre for academic research, Nipissing University offers modern, top-level facilities on campus. The campus also has the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre. Here, students will find various leisure and sports facilities, such as gymnasiums, squash courts, fitness studios and weight rooms.
Currently, the university provides two types of on-campus accommodation for students. First, an option to share with three other students is available in the suite-style housing. Here students have an apartment-style residence. Alternatively, students can choose the townhouse option, where they share with five other students. This option is in a shared house across two levels. Both options comes with basic amenities such as internet, cable TV, bathrooms and kitchen facilities.
Nipissing also provides an Off Campus Housing Service where students can get support with house listings and finding landlords in the City of North Bay.
Additional research facilities include laboratories for chemistry, biomechanics, physics, robotics, geomatics and ergonomics.
For academic study, the Harris Learning Library has specialist books, digital resources and many study areas. In 2012, the library received the American Library Association's Interior Design Award.
On campus, students will find a welcoming and laid-back community. The establishment promotes a diverse and civil community, which creates a safe and relaxed environment for all students. In addition, there are plenty of activities and events to enjoy whilst studying at Nipissing. The Residents' Councils regularly organise events like potluck suppers, skating parties, the winter carnival, athletic events, movie nights, and coffee houses. In addition, students can participate in intramural sports or join one of the 25 clubs.
Located between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake near the City of North Bay, Nipissing is surrounded by natural beauty. As a result, students can head off campus to explore protected natural areas, heritage forest parks and historical sites. Furthermore, the two lakes host various exercise and water sports activities, including biking, fishing spots and boating.
In North Bay, students will also find a laid-back community that is welcoming of students. Here further sites and activities are available, such as art galleries, local festivals and public beaches. But for a larger city experience, Toronto and Ottawa are approximately three and half hours' drive away.
Campuses
Nipissing University is located in Northbay, Ontario. The campus has over 20km of hiking trails and is surrounded by nature. You can enjoy North Bay’s beautiful Duchesnay Falls which is a short hike away.
Other points of Interest near the campus are Lake Nipissing, Laurier Woods Conservation Area, North Bay Heritage Railway and Carousel, Discovery North Bay Museum, and Capitol Centre. The bus/train station and airport are only 15 minutes from the campus.
The City of North Bay, Ontario, is also called the “Gateway to the North”. The city is located between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake. It is a 3-hour drive from Ottawa or Toronto. The city also offers numerous outdoor activities, such as downhill skiing, and urban bike/ trail systems.
