As of April 2025, updates to US visa regulations promise a more streamlined and simplified process for international students planning to study in the United States. Here are the key changes:

Mandatory DS-160 form submission

Students will now have to complete and submit the DS-160 form before booking the visa appointment. Any mismatch in the barcode number on the DS-160 confirmation page and the appointment will require rescheduling and an additional fee.

This change aims to streamline the application process and requires applicants to double-check their information to reduce errors.

Flexibility in rescheduling appointments

Students can now reschedule their visa appointments once without any additional fees. This provides students with more leeway to address unexpected delays, making the visa process more accommodating.

However, a fee will apply for subsequent rescheduling.

Changes to interview waiver policy

Fewer students will now qualify for interview waivers, meaning more students may need to attend in-person interviews. The goal of this change is to strengthen security. However, certain applicants, such as those renewing prior US visas, may qualify for interview waivers.

Advance submission of supporting documents

Required documents such as financial records must now be submitted digitally. Students will now have to submit the required documents at least 72 hours before their scheduled interview via the CEAC portal. This step accelerates visa processing by allowing early review by consular staff.

For international students, the message is clear:

  • Start the process early
  • Double-check every detail
  • Stay up-to-date on regulations

These updates aim to make the US visa process more transparent and manageable, addressing common pain points such as scheduling rigidity and document delays. While some policies, like the reduced interview waiver eligibility, may increase the need for in-person appointments, added flexibility in rescheduling and early document submission brings practical advantages.
