Situated in the heart of Ireland’s stunning scenery, Waterford is a thriving harbour city in the south-east of the country. It’s the oldest city in the Republic of Ireland and a friendly and bustling home-from-home.

Waterford Harbour is quirky and welcoming, and the city sits on the edge of the Copper Coast, named after the historical copper mines that dotted the landscape in the 19th century. 2. The community

The university prides itself on its welcoming and supportive community, building on the Irish reputation for good humour and great local bonds. It’s perhaps unsurprising then that they offer a huge support programme for international students - yet another great reason to study at WIT!

International students have full access to the range of services offered by the Careers Centre, including one-to-one advice, career support, online resources and further academic support in each school.

There’s also an excellent scholarship programme, depending on the course and level of study you’re applying for!

3. The facilities

The university’s facilities include the Luke Wadding Library, home to 180,000 print items and 120,000 ebooks. There’s also a dedicated learning centre, Special Collections, Academic Skills Centre and over 1000 reader spaces covering 6000 metres squared.

There’s also separate buildings and facilities for Nursing, Tourism and Leisure and ICT. Moreover, the ArcLabs Research and Innovation Centre is located just ten minutes from the main campus in a stunning woodland setting. 

Here, the building is home to the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group, one of the largest information and communications and technology research groups in Ireland. On the same site, the Institute’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and the South East Enterprise Platform Programme provide entrepreneurs and early state centuries with the support needed to be successful.

4. The sports

Sports at Waterford Institute of Technology forms an exciting part of student life. Alongside athletics, badminton, basketball and swimming are traditional Irish sports including Gaelic Football and Camogie.

Students can also get involved with the WIT Motor Sport Club, with racing taking place at outings at Kiltorcan and Tipperary Raceways.

Waterford Institute of Technology’s Sports Campus covers nearly 160 acres and includes floodlit grass pitches, all-weather pitches, physiotherapy rooms, cricket pitches and first-class changing facilities.

5. The culture

The Irish are known for their bubbly and welcoming demeanor, and Waterford is steeped in ancient history adding to its charm.

Rich culture lines its streets, including in Reginald’s Tower, the oldest urban civic building in Ireland. The River Suir, which runs through Waterford City, provides the basis for its maritime history - the city has been one of Ireland’s major ports for over a millennium. 

Ireland itself is a blend of rural tranquility and exciting places to live and explore, full of hidden gems and a warm community spirit. This makes it an idyllic place to live and work while studying.
