TOEFL exam dates 2024

Today, you can select various test dates for the TOEFL exam to fit around your schedule.

There are two options for taking the TOEFL exam. First, you can take the exam at one of the test centres on certain dates in 2024. Or, you can take the test online from your home.

Below, we provide the exam dates available for both methods of testing in India.

Test centres

Overall, students can take the exam at any of the 47 test centres in India. However, if you select this option, you must attend the chosen centre on the selected date and time to complete the test. Failure to attend can lead to late or rescheduling fees.

Also, each centre does not have the same amount of availability. For instance, centres in major cities, like Delhi and Mumbai have more available dates compared to Dehradun.

But students can take the test at any centre they prefer, as long as they can attend on the exam date.

Sometimes, test centres are closed on particular days. Students can check exact availability through the ETS Test Locations and Dates page, which is updated regularly.

Also, students can book an exam date at any test centre a week in advance. Or, you can book a test up to six months in advance. Alternatively, students can choose to take the TOEFL exam on a computer or paper at the testing centres.

Below, we list the available Indian TOEFL test centres up to November 2024 at popular locations.

Alternatively, students can book the TOEFL home exam once they’ve paid the registration fee. Here, you can choose any date between 24 hours and up to six months in advance. However, students must pay late fees if they book a test time at short notice (between 24 and 96 hours).

Students can book home test slots at any time between Sunday to Thursday and on Saturdays. But no slots are available on Thursdays or Fridays currently.

However, any students wanting to book the home test must meet specific requirements. These include having access to the correct equipment, software and a private room at home to complete the test.

Below are the home testing requirements for the TOEFL exam.

What is the TOEFL exam?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language exam (TOEFL) tests a student’s ability to understand and use English at an academic level. Currently, the exam tests students in four areas. These include listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.

Ultimately, the qualification helps students to gain entry to universities in English-speaking countries. Furthermore, the TOEFL qualification is accepted at over 11,500 academic institutions located in 160 countries worldwide.

Today, students can choose either the essential TOEFL exam or the TOEFL iBT exam. Below, we provide a guide to each test and its learning outcomes.

iBT Test

The iBT TOEFL exam is a formal test where students demonstrate their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills for English.

Generally, students can complete the test within the provided time limit of 3 hours and 30 minutes, including a 10-minute break.

During the exam, students answer questions and different tasks to show their ability in the English language.

The test is split into the following formats. Also, we list the approximate times for each section.

Test sectionRequirementsTime limit
ReadingRead a short text and answer 30-40 questions.72 minutes
ListeningListen to a short lecture or discussion and answer 28-39 questions.57 minutes
Speaking4 separate tasks based on a familiar subject. 17 minutes
Writing2 separate tasks responding to a spoken passage.50 minutes

Often, students use various materials to prepare for the TOEFL exam. These resources include official practice papers, informal courses, guide books and seminars.

After completing the test, students who take the test via home testing or on a computer via a test centre receive their results between 4 and 8 working days. However, if you use the paper testing method, results can take between 11 and 13 working days.

Essential test

The TOEFL Essential test is more informal and students can complete the test within a 1 hour and 30 minutes time limit with no break provided. The test is accepted at many of the same institutions as the official iBT TOEFL exam.

However, the essential exam still tests students on the four core English language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. But 50% of the test is about general English and 50% is about academic English.

At present, students can only take the essential test at home on a computer. Also, you can only take the test on Saturday or Sunday each week. No weekday testing dates are available in India yet.
