Arizona State University was founded as Territorial Normal School in 1885 with a single four-room schoolhouse. Over the next few decades, it changed names frequently before finally becoming Arizona State University in 1958. Today it is one of the largest public universities in the USA by enrolment with more than 110,000 students across its campuses.

This includes over 9,000 international students from more than 136 countries, making it the most popular public university for international students according to the Institute of International Education. It has also been named a top 10 ‘Best Buy’ in the country by The Fiske Guide to Colleges Best Buys of 2022 and among the best graduate schools in the USA by US News & World Report.

Arizona State University has been ranked number 1 in the USA and number 2 in the world of global impact in research, outreach and stewardship. It has also been ranked number 1 in the country for innovation by the US News & World Report, ahead of the likes of Stanford and MIT.

It offers more than 400 academic undergraduate programs and majors and over 590 graduate degree programs and certificates. 85 of its degree programs are ranked in the top 25 in the country with 38 appearing in their respective top 10s. 

Arizona State University has four main campuses across the state covering more than 23 million gross square feet. The research-based activity centres around its original Tempe campus with landmarks including the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium.
