Thompson Rivers University is located in Kamloops, British Columbia and was founded in 1970 as Cariboo College, operating out of the Kamloops Indian Residential School. Initially, it was a transfer college, but in 1989 it became a university college, and in 2005 gained its current name and became a university in its own right.

It currently has more than 25,000 students at its campuses - in Kamloops and Williams Lake - and through distance, online and Open Learning platforms. This includes more than 3,500 international students from over 100 countries. It offers over 140 on-campus and 60-plus Open Learning programs, including co-op work terms, undergraduate research and field schools.
