Overview

Wichita State University was founded in 1886 as a private Congregational preparatory school for young ladies. Between 1895 and 1926 it was known as the Fairmount College, after which it became the Municipal University of Wichita, finally gaining its current name in 1964. One of its claims to fame is housing the original building of the world’s first Pizza Hut restaurants on campus. 

It currently has almost 17,000 students including more than 1,750 from 110 countries around the world. Wichita State University is ranked in the top 350 universities in the USA by the QS US UNI rankings. It’s also in the top 30 US colleges for engineering research and development and offers the only masters program in Innovation Design in the state of Kansas.

Wichita State University is the most affordable research university in the region and among the most affordable four-year colleges and universities in the US. It has also been one of the Top 20 Safest U.S. College Campuses by the National Campus Safety Summit.

As well as being the most racially and ethnically diverse college campus in the state, there’s plenty going on at Wichita State University. There are more than 350 annual on-campus events, over 200 student organisations and the campus even has its own Food Truck Plaza for local food trucks.

Wichita’s Shockers (the name for its students) are famously athletic, with 15 NCAA Division 1 teams with two NCAA Final Fours and an NCAA National Championship. There are 1,000 free seats reserved for students at each men’s basketball home game.

Employability

Wichita State University students have the second-highest earnings out of any college for any research university in Kansas. They also have among the highest first-year employment rates for public university graduates working in Kansas. The Shocker New Venture Competition connect students with industry, allowing them to pitch a business idea to business owners, entrepreneurs and experts.
