When deciding where to study, you may consider factors like location, course content, the university’s reputation, and what the facilities are like.

These are all perfectly rational things to consider when planning to study in the US, but if you’re finding yourself torn between a few different states or universities, we’ve got a slightly different approach to help you make your mind up - using your star sign.

Now we’re not suggesting you should base major life decisions around your birth sign, but there’s nothing wrong with using it to get a little inspiration.

To help you out, we’ve created our own horoscope for students, so you can see which states and universities you’re most compatible with.

1. What’s your star sign?

First things first, you need to know your star sign, which is based on when in the year your birthday falls. If you’re not sure what yours is, here’s a reminder:

  • Aquarius: January 20 - February 18
  • Pisces: February 19 - March 20
  • Aries: March 21 - April 19
  • Taurus: April 20 - May 20
  • Gemini: May 21 - June 20
  • Cancer: June 21 - July 22
  • Leo: July 23 - August 22
  • Virgo: August 23 - September 22
  • Libra: September 23 - October 22
  • Scorpio: October 23 - November 21
  • Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21
  • Capricorn: December 22 - January 19

So now you know your star sign, the next step is figuring out your element.

There are four elements in astrology — fire, earth, air and water — with each of the 12 signs falling into one of these four elements.

Read on to find out which element you are and where you should study abroad based on your zodiac sign.

2. Air-based signs: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra

Air is the element of intellect, and those with air-based signs are likely to be very social beings with great communication skills.

When it comes to choosing a state, you may find yourself gravitating towards those with plenty of open countryside, mountains and lakes which allow you to escape to refresh yourself and resharpen your mind in between your studies.

And with its rugged natural beauty, spectacular geology and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, it doesn’t get much better for air signs than Utah.

When it comes to choosing where specifically to study, the University of Utah should be at the top of your list of considerations.

The university is renowned for its innovative and industrious way of thinking and status as one of the best in the nation for creating startup companies based on student and faculty research.

Overall, the University of Utah is an exciting place to study, with a lively campus full of things to do every day and a strong reputation for helping students achieve whatever it is that they want to accomplish during their time at university.

3. Fire-based signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

It should come as no surprise that as a fire-based sign, your best matches are sunny states with reliably warm climates.

Enter Florida.

Also known as the Sunshine State, Florida has the most consistently warm temperatures year-round, making it the perfect environment for any fiery prospective international students.

Furthermore, because fire signs tend to be confident and outgoing people with great communication skills, you should look for a university with a lively student body and a good range of extracurricular activities on offer.

Ideally situated in Orlando, one of Florida’s major cities and most popular destinations, the University of Central Florida (UCF) is the second largest university in the United States, with a diverse range of over 63,000 students from all 50 states and almost 150 different countries.

With more than 650 student clubs and organisations, UCF is the perfect place for a social butterfly.

As an extra bonus, the university is set on a huge 1,415 acres of land, 800 of which are natural wood and grassland, so it’s a great spot for those who want to spend time outside enjoying the sunny weather.

4. Water-based signs: Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio

As a water sign, your ideal set-up would be a university that allows you to go from class straight to the beach.

Not only are water signs naturally drawn to the sea, but they are also likely to be emotionally sensitive, and often find themselves in deep thought. Of course, everyone knows that the best place to lose yourself in your thoughts is on a beach, looking out over the ocean.

All of this points to New Orleans or Florida being the place for you. In particular, we recommend checking out Florida International University.

As a Top 50 public university, Florida International University is a leader in research and innovation both in Miami and globally, with two campuses and multiple centres across South Florida as well as over 140 countries represented in the student body

The best part of all? The Biscayne Bay Campus is right on the edge of sandy shores, perfect for sunbathing, kayaking or even just a quick post-class dip. You can even join the university’s beach volleyball team!

5. Earth-based signs: Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo

Those with an earth-based element tend to be loyal, hardworking and grounded people, in touch with themselves and the wider environment around them.

Though they will be able to form roots wherever they go, big cities with lots going on are where earth signs will flourish.

New York, Los Angeles and Chicago are the three largest US cities by population, so earth-based signs will feel right at home within the hustle and bustle of busy city life.

So where should you study?

Chicago has the best of both worlds. Not only is it one of America’s most vibrant cities, but it also has more than 8,800 acres of green space, with lots of parks, gardens and green rooftops scattered across the city.

Set in the heart of this exciting city, the University of Illinois in Chicago (UIC) is Chicago’s largest and most diverse university, offering students a chance to benefit from world-leading research and top-class degrees highly valued by employers.

The campus has a strong feeling of community, and with a wide range of student-run groups and events to get involved in, you’ll feel at home in no time.
