What languages are taught in Irish schools?

Updated on: Aug 2, 2023

In Irish schools, there are two official languages that are taught: Irish (also known as Gaeilge) and English. Irish is a compulsory subject for all students, from primary school to the end of secondary school, and is taught as a core subject. English is also a core subject and is taught as the primary language of instruction in all subjects except Irish. In addition, many schools also offer the teaching of other modern foreign languages, such as French, Spanish, and German, as optional subjects.
