Common mistakes students make, that could lead to visa refusal

Applying to study abroad involves more than securing an offer. Students also need to meet university and visa compliance requirements, particularly around financial documents and compliance interviews.

With the new regulatory model introduced for UK student sponsors from June 2026, universities are being assessed against stricter thresholds, including a visa refusal rate below 5%, enrolment rate of at least 95% and course completion rate of at least 85%. The course completion threshold will rise to 90% from June 2027.

This makes getting the basics right more important than ever.

What students should do

1. Never miss a deadline

Missing a university deadline can have consequences beyond a missed date. In one case, a student missed important deadlines after receiving their offer, which meant their university entry was deferred to a later intake.

  • Once you receive your offer, keep track of every deadline
  • Submit documents, complete university requirements to progress your application.

Don't assume that having an offer means your place is secured indefinitely. Read our guide on preparing the right documents at the right time.

2. Get your finances right

Small errors can have serious consequences.

In one case, a student's visa was refused because the required funds had been held for 27 days instead of 28. In another, the student fell short of the required financial amount by less than £50. Both were avoidable with the right checks.

Students should therefore check not only how much money they need, but also how long the funds must be held and whether their financial evidence meets the relevant requirements.

3. Be prepared for the compliance interview

Once a student has received an offer, they should begin preparing for their compliance or university interview rather than waiting until the last minute.

Edvoy's mock compliance interviews assess areas including:

  • English language ability
  • Knowledge of the chosen university
  • Knowledge of the chosen course
  • Understanding of their study plans

Students are given three opportunities to clear the mock interview. These are practice sessions designed to familiarise students with the type of questioning they may encounter at university or UKVI level. They do not guarantee admission.

How Edvoy is helping

Edvoy has introduced additional checks to help students identify avoidable compliance issues before they become visa problems.

Financial documents must be uploaded to the Edvoy portal when the funds are ready. The Compliance team checks them against UKVI requirements and contacts the bank to verify the availability of funds. Only after this verification can the CAS documentation be uploaded to the Edvoy portal.

Compliance guidance is also being incorporated throughout the student journey, with document guidance starting from the application stage and visa and mock interview guidance being introduced once students reach the offer stage.

The takeaway

The best approach is simple: prepare early, check everything carefully and ask for help when you're unsure.

At Edvoy, our Compliance team is here to help make sure you are prepared and your documents meet the required guidelines before you progress.

We’ll help you avoid common mistakes and make sure everything is ready. From checking your financial documents to preparing you for your compliance interview, these checks can help identify issues early and give you time to fix them.
